Malcolm Gladwell wants you to STOP working from home—and I agree with him. I know first hand how comfortable rolling out of bed and into your ‘virtual’ office can be. But it can also be detrimental to your personal development. In exchange for a longer sleep and no commute, you give up small talk with colleagues, in-person meetings, public speaking, the ability to read a room & body language, etc. Essentially, all the soft skills required to climb the corporate ladder. But don’t take it from me, take it from Canada’s own Malcolm Gladwell on The Diary of a CEO podcast.
The difficulty in having, well, difficult conversations.
And speaking of those soft skills referenced above? If left undeveloped, they make handling and delivering bad news even harder. Liane Davey wants you to master The Art of the Difficult Conversation.
Do comedians make great leaders?
If used correctly, I’ve found humour can play a strong role in leadership. It helps build bridges with fellow teammates, and can even make you more approachable. After all, comedy = laughter, and laughter = happiness. And who doesn’t want a happy team? But according to Church+State’s Ron Tite, it might be less about laughter and more about how good comedians are strong observers—and you want a leader who can sense when somethings off. If it wasn't for a teacher's strike, Marilyn Sherman might have a different career. Marilyn 'tripped' [her words] into media while still in high school. We learn about her days at Saffer, Cravit, and Freedman—where she served as planner and buyer on many big retail accounts like Towers department stores and Bata Shoes. This episode originally aired in the Fall of 2015.
