Joseph Gordon-Levitt: Craving Attention Makes You Less Creative

“If your creativity is driven by a desire to get attention, you’re never going to be creatively fulfilled”.

Wait what? That can’t be right! And coming from an actor/celebrity! Isn’t attention endemic to their success?

Celebrities aren’t immune to the downsides of social media. In this TED Talk, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt shares how chasing (social media) followers left him with a sense of inadequacy. But above all, he lays out an argument for how it rendered him less creative—something that anyone in the creative industries should dread.

So what is the solution? It turns out that paying attention is far more powerful than chasing it. It’s a refreshing video that speaks to people optimizing their life for likes, shares, and followers.
